The living legend and doyen of Indian Statistics, 91years old Padmavibhushan Prof
C.R. Rao is designated fro Guy Medal in Gold of the Royal Statistical Society, UK.
IN the 115years history of Royal Statistical Society he is 34th receipient of the
award. He is the first Asian, first non European and first non American to receive
the award. It will be formally presented to Prof. C.R.Rao in June in a function
to be held in London informed Dr. S.B. Rao, Director of CR Rao Advanced Institute
of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Sciences(AIMSCS) addressing a press conference
in city held in city. CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer
Science(AIMSCS) which started functioning from University of Hyderabad is now ready
with a new building.
Hyderabad Central University gave five acres of land for the
building. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh allocated Rs 15crore for the construction
of the building. The 43,000sq ft new building is now ready to be inaugurated in
February, informed Dr. S.B. Rao. The objective of this academy is to propagate Statistics
and promote research, he informed.
Within two years since the functioning of the
academy it has got recognition by Department of Scientific & Industrial Research(DSIR)
as research laboratory. It has got a sanction of a research project in Mathematical
Sciences of 5 years duratrion by DST at a cost of Rs 6.36cr, another research project
in Cryptography and Cryptanalysis by Government of India at a cost of Rs 12.48cr,
and one more research project on Modulation Classfication by a DRDO Lab at a cost
of Rs 10 lakhs etc and others. It hosted an International Conference on Cryptology.
It entered MoU with IIIT(Hyderabad), Sambalpur University, IIT(Mumbai), Indian Statistical
Institute(Kolkata) mainly for taking up joint research projects apart from University
of Hyderabad. Speaking on the occasion Prof. Allam Appa Rao, Vice Chancellor of
JNTU-Kakinada said the University decided to present a Honorary Doctorate to Prof
C.R. Rao on the occasion of its 1st Convocation to be held on February 6, 2011 in
Kakinada.
This will be Prof. C.R. Rao’s 33rd Honorary Doctorate. 18 Countries in
6 continents conferred on him Honorary Doctorates so far, informed Prof. Allam Appa
Rao. Addressing the gathering Prof C.R. Rao highlighted the importance of Statistics.
It touches in every human endeavour he said. Statistics can be useful in detecting
fraunds such as Stamps Scams, Fake Notes he said.
Using statistics these scams and
fake currency notes were unearthened in just ten days. Statistics can also be used
to curtail black money, he added. Prof C.R.Rao is a Former Director of Indian Statistical
Institute, Eberly Professor Emeritus orf Statistics and Director, Center for Multivariate
Analysis Pennsylvania State University, USA. Prof Rao authored 14 books and 350
research papers.
He edited 30 handbooks on different areas of statistics. He was
honoured by then President of America George Bush as a “Prophet of a Better Age”
at the White House in 2002. Indian Government conferred on him The highest and most
prestigious INDIA SCIENCE AWARD in recognition of his significant contributions
to the field of statistical science that had profound influence on the Theory and
Applications of Statistics, well recognized all over the world.
Prof Rao was decorated
with Padma Vibushan, the second highest civilian award by the Government of India
for “Outstanding Contributions to Science and Engineering Statistics”. He was also
selected as one of the “Top Ten” Indian Scientists in all Fields in the year 1988.
