Gurugunta Samasthan

In the The Samasthan was in the Lingsugur Taluk in Raichur District. The Samasthan had an area of 210 sq. miles with 43 villages. According to the l930 records the annual income of the Samasthan was Rs. 1.40 lakh, of which Rs. 3,000 was paid annually to the Nizam as tribute. The ruling family of the Samasthan was Jadi Linga Naik Desai who got the Jagir in 1620, during the reign of Bijapur kings.

For his acts of bravery the Raja was given the title of “Sherza Bahadur” (Brave Tiger). According to the historical records the Rajas ruled the Samasthan for several decades. Raja Soma Linga Naik III died in 1858 without any issue. Then the Rani, Katamma, was appointed as the Regent by the Nizam to administer the state.

Later she adopted her brother’s son to succeed as Raja by name Jadi Somappa Naik Sherza Bahadur. The Rani ruled the Samasthan during the minority of the boy. When the boy attained adulthood, he took charge of the Samasthan in 1867 but died in 1892 without leaving any male issue. The Samasthan was therefore taken over by the government, but later, at the request of the family members,it was restored to them.
