The fifth in the Qutb Shahi line of kings, Muhammad Quli Qutb, built this house of mourning in 1594. Barely 100 metres away from the Naya Pul bridge, opposite the Madina Building, the Badshahi Ashur Khana bears the name of its builder in the central niche and on the western wall. The interior was decorated with exquisite enamel tile work during the reign of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. Later, Sultan Abdullah Qutb Shah introduced the use of standards (alams) during the Muslim month of mourning Moharrum and refurbished the Ashur Khana.
The Qutb Shahi kings were not as noted for enamel decoration as the Bahmanis of Bidar. But they introduced attractive decorations and nearly four centuries after it was built, the Ashur Khana exudes a certain freshness, for the resplendent enamel tiles continue to keep their lustre and vibrant colours.
