Accession 1580 Death 1612
The fifth king’s tomb was a first attempt to build on a massive scale. This magnificent tomb of the founder of Hyderabad is one of the largest and certainly the finest in the complex. It is 42.5 metres high with a dome of 18.2 metres. The imposing look is created by the judicious use of a double terrace, rising to 6 metres from the ground. The lower terrace is 60.8 metres square supported by a facade of 28 open arches on each side. The upper one is 38.3 metres square.
This tomb was designed as a picturesque gallery with false openings with two central pillars. The roof is held up by an octagonal topped by lotus capitals. The monotony is relieved by rich ornamental parapets with minarets at the corners. The real grave is in the crypt in the middle of the lower plinth at ground level. The shadow tomb is in majestic surroundings at the higher floor level. Sultan Muhammad Quli died on 11th January
1612.
