Kiran Kumar Reddy puts off meet, triggers quit talk
Freitag, 15. November 2013

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy distributes packets of energy beverages at Ravindra Bharati on the occasion of Children’s Day. — S. Surender Reddy.

The sudden decision of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to postpone his meeting with the Group of Ministers on Telangana, scheduled for Thursday night, created a flutter in political circles. Speculation was rife that he was about to resign and that the Congress high command was searching for a replacement.

However, the CM told the media at Ravindra Bharathi on Thursday that he had postponed the GoM meeting because he had to be present at the inauguration of the International Children's Film Festival on Thursday evening, and will be attending the GoM meeting on November 18. Asked about his resignation, the Chief Minister laughed loudly and moved on.

To quell the speculations about his rescheduling the GoM meeting, the Chief Minister’s Office took the unusual step of putting out a press release explaining the reason.

What is curious is that since the Chief Minister was aware of the programme in the city on Thursday, why did he not inform the Union home minister yesterday when the latter contacted him on the telephone?

 ‘CM’s channel’ creates a sensation

A Telugu news channel, whose owners are said to be close to Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s brother, Nallari Santosh Kumar Reddy, created a sensation on Thursday morning when it aired a special news bulletin stating that Kiran Kumar Reddy is to be replaced as Chief Minister by Kanna Laxminarayana, the current agriculture minister of the state.

The news cast said Kiran Kumar Reddy was being shown the door because he was committed to a united state.

The channel, popular as Chief Minister’s official channel in the political circles, its Editorial Team has been specifically asked by some persons close to Santosh Kumar Reddy to air bullet-ins stating that Kiran Kumar Reddy decided to defy the Congress high command and refused to go to Delhi.

The channel also reported that Laxminarayana had a meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi recently and that he has agreed to implement the agenda of the party’s central leadership and ensure that the Telangana Bill is passed in the state Assembly without a hitch.

Reactions were taken from the public on the replacement and all supported the Chief Minister and resented the move to replace him.

Samsung to launch curved display phone in Oct
Donnerstag, 26. September 2013

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said it will introduce a smartphone with a curved display in October, as the world's top handset maker seeks to set the pace of hardware innovation and maintain its supremacy in a fiercely competitive business.

Curved displays are an early stage in screen evolution which is shifting to bendable or foldable designs, eventually allowing mobile and wearable gadgets to take on new forms that could radically change the high-end smartphone market.

"We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October," Samsung's mobile business head of strategic marketing D.J. Lee said on Wednesday at an event launching the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone in Seoul.

In January Samsung, which has taken over from Apple as the global smartphone leader, showed off prototype products with a flexible screen and a display that extends from the side of a device.

But technology firms have yet to figure out how to mass produce the parts cheaply and come up with display panels that can be as thin as a sheet and highly heat resistant.

Curved display is already commercially available in large-screen televisions. Samsung and its home rival LG Electronics Inc had started selling curved OLED TV sets this year priced at about $9,000

Posts can be sacrificed for Telangana, says Jana Reddy
Montag, 1. Juli 2013
The massive crowd at the Telangana Sadhana Sabha held at Hyderabad on Sunday.— DC

Panchayat raj minister K. Jana Reddy, who presided over the Telangana Sadhana Sabha organised by T-Congress leaders on Sunday, said, “Everyone is talking about our posts and sacrifices. Some leaders are asking that after this meeting, if the high command won’t react positively, what will you do? We will go to the high command and tell AICC president Sonia Gandhi that we don’t want the posts. And we won’t ask for party tickets in the next elections, give tickets to whoever you want. We won’t leave the party. We will be in the party and fight for Telangana state. We are ready to sacrifice anything.”

Meanwhile, an activist from the Telangana Azad Force showed a slipper at Jana Reddy when he was speaking. Police rushed to the spot and took him away. Another protester threw a slipper towards the dais, but it fell in the press gallery.

All the Telangana state ministers except Danam Nagendar, M. Mukesh and R. Venkat Reddy, attended the meeting. Srinivas said that people know that Telangana would not be possible through other parties; it is only possible through the Congress party. “Telugu people are going to have two states very soon. In the next two years, the two states will become number one and two in the country in development,” he declared. Srinivas said that Hyderabad will be the capital of Telangana.

Raja Narasimha said that Telangana “packages” are not acceptable. “We are fighting for self-respect and existence. In the last 56 years Seemandhra chief ministers have ruled the state for 44 years and Telangana chief ministers ruled for only 12 years. Is this equality?” he questioned. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Telugu Desam have cheated the Telangana people.

Rajya Sabha member and former PCC president V. Hanumantha Rao said that the high command will announce a separate state soon, and Telangana youth must not attempt suicide in the cause.

Minister D. Sridhar Babu, in his welcome, address said that this meeting was not being held for election purposes as some opposition leaders have alleged. He said the high command will recognise the sentiments of the Telangana people and will announce a separate state very soon.

Naik, Satyanarayana, Prabhakar and Gutta Sukhendar Reddy, MLA Komatireddy Venkata Reddy and several state ministers, including former home minister Sabita Indra Reddy also spoke during the meeting.

Karnad’s Nagamandala has perhaps always been a play ahead of its time, dealing with the complex theme of female sexuality in the language of modern theatre characteristic of the 80s decade. Today, in the wake of raging debates on rape, desire, sexuality and morality, the text appears strikingly relevant.

The plot of Play With A Cobra traces the journey of a young girl called Rani from naivety to eventual womanhood in a traumatic marriage, while toiling upon the complex theme of desire. Drawing on the experiences of exclusion, confinement and the inferno of desire that abets transgression, the text revolves around the events of Rani’s mistreatment by her husband, her finding camaraderie in an old widow, to eventual fulfilment of her desires in dubious circumstances. But in fulfilment lies the germ of an impending turmoil - that of moral questioning and judgement.

This adaptation of Nagamandala takes liberties with the original script in two ways. First, it presents the inherent ambiguity of the plot in blatant words to an urban audience. Second, it attempts to shift the focus from the written text to a performative language that relies more on the use of space, lights, and visuals. Play With a Cobra hopes to be not a stage play, but an experience.

And what better way to highlight this than by getting citizens on our very old and trusted mode of transportation – cycling."

Samahaara Hyderabad Theatre Festival 2012: Noises Off
Freitag, 14. Dezember 2012

Noises Off by Michael Frayn is a play within a play. It is about an ambitious director and his troupe of mediocre actors. The cast and crew are putting together a silly sex comedy titled, Nothing On - a single-set farce in which lovers frolic, doors slam, clothes are tossed away, and embarrassing hi-jinks ensue. The two acts of Noises Off expose different phases of the disastrous show, Nothing On. Much of the comedy emerges from the subtle variations in each version as off-stage chaos affects on-stage performance, with a great deal of slapstick. The contrast between players` on-stage and off-stage personalities is also a source of comic dissonance.

Techies log into green campaign
Freitag, 8. Juni 2012
HYDERABAD: On the occasion of World Environment Day, various events and programmes were organized in different parts of the city to instill a sense of responsibility towards environment. Most of these programmes included tree plantation, seminars, workshops, competitions and other cultural shows.

A large number of techies extended their support to a tree plantation programme held near Kondapur. Around 1,000 saplings were planted near two lakes as part of this initiative in which IT employees participated along with social activists and government officials. A 4-km 'Green walk' marathon was also held at Hi-Tec City, which was organized by an IT firm.

"By participating in this activity, we want to turn this area into a green district. Many of the participating employees are youngsters, who want to work for a better environment in the city," said P Bipin Chandra, Secretary, ITsAP (The IT and ITES industry Association of AP). The state forest department which held painting, essay writing and other competitions at the city zoo now plans to hold more such events every month till next year.

A Sankaran, deputy conservator of forests, AP forest department, said, "We have chalked out a plan for the next one year. We will conduct similar events at least once in a month until next year. This way we want to make people aware about environment. It will also result in a larger participation."

The Pollution Control Board (PCB) had organized a nine-day event which culminated on Tuesday and will hold a tree plantation programme in July.

W G Prasanna Kumar, social scientist, PCB, felt that since the month of June is not ideal for tree plantation and outdoor activities, a state environment day in July may help the cause. "Since the month of June is becoming warmer we can have a state environment day sometime in July. In our state, that is the best time to plant saplings since the soil is also ready which would encourage many to participate."

Radio studio visit has kids on song
Donnerstag, 31. Mai 2012
HYDERABAD: Sophisticated equipment, cool microphones and headphones, soundproof cabins and the trademark eye-catching 'On air' signs left the young participants of the Radio Mirchi studio visit fascinated. The event, a part of TOI's Hyderabad for Kids campaign, was held on Tuesday at the Radio Mirchi office in Begumpet. It gave 75 kids the rare opportunity to step inside a radio station office and witness its inner workings.

From five-year-olds to 18-year-olds, the participants were so eager to see the studio and meet the radio jockeys and professionals that many of them turned up before time at the venue. After the names of all the participants were registered, they were divided into four batches and taken into the studios one batch at a time. Once inside, the kids couldn't help but stare wide-eyed in amazement at all the studio equipment and the heavy soundproof doors as their guide B Bharathi, a radio jockey (RJ), explained them about what exactly happens there. They were first taken into the live studio from where all the live shows were aired. The participants' excitement levels soared when they realised that they were actually walking into the studio while a show was being aired. RJ Dheeraja, who was in the middle of her show, welcomed the kids into the studio when a song was being played.

They were shown the screen on which the detailed log of songs, advertisements and jock talk, i.e. when the RJ speaks, was displayed, the switches that control the volume, the phone used to take listeners' calls and the signature headphones worn by the RJ. Kids were even allowed to stay in the studio while the RJ went live on air and took a couple of calls from listeners. Many captured the RJ speaking into the microphone live on their phone cameras, vowing to show it to their friends back home.

The group was then shown the back-up studio wherein all the recorded shows and segments were recorded and edited. They even took turns saying a couple of lines into the mike, including the popular tagline of the station. Just when they thought they had seen it all, the participants interacted with R Kiran Kumar, a sound engineer and the man behind the popular comic character named 'Breaking news Baburao' and Yashwanth Nag, music composer of the Telugu film Neeku Naaku Dash Dash.

Talking about his experience at the event, eight-year-old Vedant A said, "I was so excited when I came to know that I will get to visit a radio station. The entire experience was mind blowing. I will boast about this to all my friends and tell my teacher too about it." The RJs also said they had a great time with the enthusiastic children. B Bharathi said, "It's nice as the young kids were so enthusiastic to know about the functioning of a radio station. Many of them had very microphone-friendly voices and a distinct style. I cleared their misconceptions about a radio station having only RJs and told them about the various career opportunities here. Such events give them a good exposure to these fields; it is a great initiative."

Godavari supply still a pipe dream
Samstag, 19. Mai 2012
HYDERABAD: Two unusual developments greeted the city residents at the onset of summer this March. The fi rst was that the kiosks that dot the arterial roads offering earthen pot-cooled drinking water to the parched passers-by were conspicuous by their absence, save for the few-odd ones run by NGOs. The second was that the netas of the city, who do not miss a single opportunity to derive political mileage from people-interactive public events, did not dare to be seen at the Racha Banda programme that were held all over the city.

Intended to be an event where public representatives and offi cials meet local residents and attend to their day-to-day civic problems, the presence of scores of angry women carrying empty pots and eager to confront the local legislator over the shortage of drinking water in the city ensured that the MLAs including many ministers did the vanishing trick.

In fact, the acute drinking water crisis in the city started early this summer and only worsened in the coming weeks. Even city offi cials admit that only the generosity of the rain gods would determine how much the problem would ease. Adding to the misery of residents is that the much promised water from the Krishna (Phase III) and Godavari rivers to Hyderabad (that sees a daily infl ux of about 5,000 people) is still in the making. "The city drinking water projects have lingered on for over a decade now without providing the much needed succor. Not only have they not alleviated the drinking water shortage, but have also turned the roads into a mess with their constant digging for laying the water pipelines," said M Raghavendra Rao, a Himayatnagar resident.

Mandated to provide drinking water to about 80 lakh residents in the GHMC area and 12 surrounding municipalities, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is supplies about 340 Million Gallons Daily (MGD) when the demand is around 460 MGD. Of this, Krishna water Phase I and II is supplying the maximum of 180 MGD followed by Singur (75 MGD), Manjira (45 MGD), Osmansagar (25 MGD) and Himayatsagar (15 MGD).

While the Godavari drinking water project is expected to provide 172 MGD, Krishna water project Phase III is meant to supply 90 MGD of water. "If both of these happen, the city's drinking water problems will evaporate and there will be surplus water to take care of the increasing population for at least another decade," said a water board offi cial. However, like most projects involving the offi cialdom, the Godavari and Krishna Phase III have kept the city residents dry and hanging for the last three years.

At a cost of Rs 3,375 crore, the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project, also called the Maulana Abul Kalam Hyderabad Srujala Sravanthi Scheme Phase I, aims to draw water to the city from Yellampalli Barrage in Karimnagar by laying a 186 kmlong water pipeline. The project was meant to be ready by 2010, but fi nancial problems and delays in land acquisition have led to offi cials giving December 2013 as its new date. Till date, only 76 km of the 186 km project has been laid. Alwal, Qutuballapur, Rajendranagar, Kukatpally, Seri Ligampally, Secunderabad Cantonment, Kapra and Malkajgiri GHMC circles stand to get drinking water once the Godavari project is ready.

Compared to the Godavari project, the Krishna drinking water phase III is even far away from being implemented. At a cost of Rs 1,670 crore, 90 MGD of water is to be drawn from the Krishna river through the Alimineti Madhava Reddy (AMRP) project from the Akkampally balancing reservoir. No timeline has been drawn for this project as the Hyderabad water board is still to secure fi nancial assistance though it is in talks with HUDCO.

Rome Masters: Djokovic, Federer in heavyweight semifinal clash
Samstag, 19. Mai 2012
ROME: Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will clash for the 25th time in Saturday's Rome Masters semifinals while Rafael Nadal also progressed, ensuring the big three all made the last four of this crucial French Open warm-up.

Defending champion Djokovic, the top seed, fought through the first set, before racing away in the second to beat French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 6-1.

Federer, fresh from his Madrid Masters triumph last weekend, followed the script with a 6-1, 6-2 demolition of Italian Andreas Seppi in just 53 minutes, with the Swiss third seed winning 14 of the first 15 points.

Second seed Nadal, meanwhile, got the better of Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych, grinding out a 6-4, 7-5 win and will meet fellow Spaniard David Ferrer.

"It was a very good match for me. From the start I played aggressive," said Federer.

"The goals have to be the same against Djokovic -- take it to him and play my game."

Rome is one of the few big events Federer has not won, losing finals in 2003 and 2006.

But the Swiss star, who hasn't played Djokovic since his marathon US Open semi-final defeat last year, showed his clay game is nearing perfection, just a week before the start of the French Open.

Djokovic was tested early on by Tsonga in a first set filled with five breaks of serve. But after winning the opener in nearly an hour, Tsonga's defences collapsed as the top seed came home for his 29th win of the season.

"In the second set I played one of the best sets on clay this year," said Serb star Djokovic.

"This is encouraging for the challenges ahead. With Roland Garros coming, I'm playing and feeling better in every match."

Nadal will face off in the final four against compatriot and sixth seed Ferrer, who beat French 15th seed Richard Gasquet 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.

"I played one of my best matches on clay against a difficult opponent," said five-time Rome winner Nadal.

"I'm happy to do so well after also playing well in Monte Carlo and Barcelona (where he won both titles). It was a big match because the level of the opponent was high and he plays with big confidence. I played under pressure all the time."

Nadal and Ferrer went toe-to-toe less than three weeks ago, with Nadal winning the final to take his seventh trophy on home clay in Barcelona.

Nadal showed he has regained his blistering form after a poor third-round loss a week ago on blue clay in Madrid as he beat Berdych for the 11th time in succession in a struggle lasting just over two hours.

The French Open champion produced 34 winners and just 10 unforced errors in a superlative display, while Berdych went for broke throughout, posting 28 winners and 24 unforced errors and losing serve three times.

World number three Nadal has now won all but two of his 36 matches at the Foro Italico and has emerged victorious in all three clay meetings with a player he also beat in the 2010 Wimbledon final.

Meanwhile, Ferrer needed an hour and three-quarters before putting out Gasquet, who played the Estoril final on clay earlier this month.

The gutsy Spaniard, who is still seeking his first title this season, is through to the quarter-finals in Rome for the first time.

Kanpur museum shut for past 15 months for want of funds
Samstag, 19. Mai 2012

KANPUR: No events were held in the city to mark the International Museum Day on Friday mainly because there is no museum functional in the district presently.

The TOI team planned to visit the Kanpur museum on International Museum Day which was celebrated on May 18. The theme of the day was 'New Challenges, New Inspirations'. But the scene at Nana Rao Park in Bithoor (where the Kanpur museum is situated) was highly disappointing. The museum door was locked and no one was there to tell us the reason for this unannounced closing of the museum.

When TOI contacted Subhash Agarwal, the caretaker of the museum, he informed that the museum had been nonfunctional due to unavailability of funds for over a year now. The museum, which was earlier situated in Phoolbagh, was shifted to Nana Rao Park in Bithoor in February 2011. It was primarily done to increase the influx of the visitors to the museum. The authorities also considered Bithoor a better place to keep the archaeological and antique things preserved.

At that time several promises were made by the district administration who assured of upliftment of the museum. Allotment of funds for the preservation of antique coins and other stuff in the museum was also assured by administrative authorities. But Agarwal claimed: "There have been no funds allotted for making the museum functional even after 15 months of its shifting."

"No initiative was taken by the district administration to reopen this museum for the people. Several letters and meetings were held with various administrative officials, but no one paid heed to this issue," informed another official of the museum on condition of anonymity.

He added that if the situation remained the same, antiques and valuables kept inside the locked doors would be damaged and lost forever.

However, on being apprised of the facts, district magistrate MP Agarwal assured for making the museum functional soon, informed Agarwal.
